James E. Lewis, an Afro-American died after being shot by police on January 1, 2017 in Springfield, Missouri (United States)

2017_01_01_James_ E_Lewis_44 .pngSpringfield police say the man killed by officers in Silver Springs Park was the Afro-American James E. Lewis, 44, of Springfield. Police say he had a gun and was threatening to kill his wife before he displayed that gun to officers, who fatally shot him.

According to his family members however, James was mentally sick. They say they wish they had been there to calm him down, as they've dealt with his mental illness for years. Though nothing can change the outcome, they want to stress the importance of mental health training to help others.

Police according to k3.com the officers attempted to speak with him, then deployed less-lethal weapons (like bean bags) before shooting James when he displayed a gun. When is police going to stop killing innocents just because they are black? A challenge for the american country as a whole and for the black community in particular.
